Navajo Area Abandoned Uranium Mines Response, Assessment, and Evaluation Services

About the RAES Contract

The purpose of the Navajo Abandoned Uranium Mines Response, Assessment, and Evaluation Services (RAES) contract is to provide nationally consistent services to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Remedial Project Managers (RPMs), On-Scene Coordinators (OSCs) and other federal officials implementing USEPA’s responsibilities for response site activities where the release, or threatened release, of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants poses a risk to human or environmental health under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA). Services performed under RAES may include response, assessment, technical support, data management, logistics, and training activities and will primarily be performed at uranium mining-related sites that may have an impact on or within the Navajo Nation (within USEPA Regions 9 in Arizona and New Mexico) and within the Grants Mining District (located in USEPA Region 6 New Mexico). Under RAES, Tetra Tech, Inc. will provide scientific/technical support for USEPA activities in furtherance of the agency’s primary mission: the protection of human health and the environment.

One of our success stories involves a Navajo student intern launching his environmental career. He is now a Remedial Project Manager at the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency. Tetra Tech hired a student as an environmental intern to support the RAES program. He was first trained in health and safety (HAZWOPER), first aid, and radiation safety to meet the requirements for performing RAES field work. His was further mentored by Tetra Tech field team leads and specialists. Over one summer and fall, he worked over 1,000 combined field and office hours, learning a variety of skills, including:

  • Conducting gamma radiation surveys
  • Performing geological and environmental reconnaissance and sampling
  • Supporting a large-scale x-ray fluorescence (XRF) study, which included in-situ and in-office XRF analysis
  • Overseeing soil boring and drilling
  • Verifying geologic formations and soil classification
  • Calibrating, decontaminating, and maintaining critical field instruments
  • Monitoring health and safety concerns
  • Participating in public meetings with community members, Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency, and US Environmental Protection Agency

This student intern went on to complete his college degree and was hired by Tetra Tech as a full-time geologist. He supported a variety of technical efforts both on the RAES program and off the Navajo Nation. Today, he is a full-time employee of the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency working on Abandoned Uranium Mine projects. We are pleased that our intern program helped to launch a career that has a tangible and lasting impact on the restoration and environmental quality of the Navajo Nation.
